UPDATED: Thanks to our friends at Verizon and FilmFest making direct donations for disaster relief efforts through cell phone texting and a smartphone app is now available.

All of us at the Center for Asian American Media wish to express our support and sincerest condolences to the Japanese people and all those who have lost loved ones in this devastating tragedy. Here at the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival, we feel a deep connection to the people of Japan and the Japanese American community.

Our thoughts are also with our partners at the New People Building here in Japantown.

  • We at Medium Rare extend our prayers and deepest sympathies to the victims of this tragic event, their families and friends, here and abroad.

  • I am printing an edition of the Thousand Cranes letterpress cards to support relief efforts in Japan. 100% proceeds will be donated to the American Red Cross to help those affected by the earthquake in Japan + tsunami throughout the Pacific.

Senbazuru – or one thousand cranes – is a tradition of folding 1,000 origami cranes to grant a wish, such as wishing for a speedy and solid recovery. This is my hope for the people, my family and friends in Japan – as they have experienced such a devastating tragedy.

Any support – including purchases of these cards, sharing of the link, spreading the word, donating to the many orgs who have created funds to help Japan {EVERY contribution counts} – is greatly appreciated~

More information for these cards can be found here:

    thank you!!!

  • I called and left a voicemail with you guys a bit ago. I recommend you hook up with an existing community relief infrastructure. Go to: http://www.jccnc.org (This is the homepage for the Japanese Community Cultural Center of Northern California, located on Sutter St. in J-town.) They have a page all ready to accept donations. Unlike the Red Cross, which gobbles up donations in administrative operations, these funds are sent directly to aid agencies in Japan. I think it will be easier for CAAM and members to plug in to their system. They successfully raised lots of $ for the ’95 Hanshin quake in Kobe…..I think with the festival going on, at all screenings this could be announced. Onlline and mail-in donations are accepted.
THIS WILL BE EASY FOR YOU GUYS, SO YOU DON’T HAVE TO SET UP YOUR OWN PAGE.
    Thanks for reading, Roji Oyama
