From silent film star Sessue Hayakawa to Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, THE SLANTED SCREEN examines portrayals of Asian men in film and television, and how a new generation of independent filmmakers are re-defining age-old stereotypes.
This fascinating documentary includes interviews with award-winning veteran actor Mako, actors Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, James Shigeta, Dustin Nguyen, Phillip Rhee, Tzi Ma, Jason Scott Lee, comedian Bobby Lee, producer Terence Chang and casting director Heidi Levitt. The film contains more than 50 film clips depicting Asian American male characters from Hollywood films spanning almost a century.
Director Jeff Adachi asks why stereotypical portrayals of Asian men continue to persist, and what needs to happen to reverse this trend. He also envisions a new, exciting future in the entertainment industry, where the diversity of our society and culture is fully represented and recognized.
