The Gate of Heavenly Peace now on DVD
This past October, the controversial Chinese writer, teacher and political dissident Liu Xiaobo was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Liu has been active in political reform campaigns in China since the mid 1980s. He is currently serving an eleven-year prison term for inciting political dissent. Liu was active in the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989 that were highly visible in the international community but hardly understood.
Recently released on DVD, The Gate of Heavenly Peace, is a riveting and explosive documentary that revisits the Tiananmen Square protests and explores the complex political process that led to the massive civil disobedience and eventual Beijing massacre of June 4th. The film contains interviews and commentary by many political dissidents including Liu Xiaobo himself.
