At over nine hours, Lav Diaz’s DEATH IN THE LAND OF ENCANTOS, unfolds against a Filipino backdrop immediately following the destruction of the country’s Bicol region after a super typhoon. Benjamin, horrified to discover that the entire community has been buried under landslides, begins wandering slowly through the devastated countryside, reconnecting with distraught friends, lovers and family members whose lives now teeter on the brink of destruction. As he rekindles long-dormant relationships, the filmmaker cuts between stark images of devastation and quiet scenes of physical and emotional intimacy between characters. Encantos won the Golden Lion Special Mention award in the documentary section of the Venice Film Festival. (2007, 545 min, digital video, presented with one 30-minute intermission – please pack a bag lunch)
