From 1981-2025, CAAM funded to hundreds of independent documentary films about the Asian American experience for public television with support from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). The CAAM Documentary Fund played a crucial role in growing the field of nonfiction storytelling about Asian American communities, producing many foundational projects, such as the groundbreaking and Peabody Award-winning Asian Americans series, the Emmy-award winning documentary Free Chol Soo Lee, and The Chinese Exclusion Act. Some of the foundational earliest documentaries about our community, such as Loni Ding’s Ancestors in the Americas.
