“Mele Murals” World Premieres at CAAMFest and Oakland Museum Of California

Meet us at OMCA for an evening of food trucks, live painting, the world premiere of Tadashi Nakamura's newest documentary, and a special musical performance by Bambu and Prometheus Brown as The Bar!

Join CAAM at the Oakland Museum of California (OMCA) for the World Premiere of the extraordinary film MELE MURALS during Friday Nights @ OMCA. Part of CAAMFest’s Pacific Showcase, presented by Pacific Islanders in Communication (PIC), MELE MURALS (dir. Tadashi Nakamura, LIFE ON FOUR STRINGS: THE JAKE SHIMABUKURO STORY) is a documentary about the transformative power of art through the unlikely union of graffiti and ancient Hawaiian culture. At the center of this story are the artists Estria Miyashiro (aka Estria) and John Hina (aka Prime), and a group of Native Hawaiian youth from the rural community of Waimea, Hawai’i. Together, they create a mural that addresses the ill effects of environmental changes and encroaching modernization on their native culture. MELE MURALS shows how public art combined with Native Hawaiian traditions transforms the students, the local community and, unexpectedly, the two artists as they rediscover their own identities and responsibilities as Hawaiian artists.

Special guests include Director/Producer Tadashi Nakamura, Executive Producer Keoni Lee, subjects Estria Miyashiro and John Hina, and more. Seating for the film is limited. Advance tickets required (note: the film is at rush for the OMCA screening; tickets are still available for the Saturday, March 19 screening in San Francisco. Read more about what rush means).

Friday Nights @ OMCA features half-off Gallery admission, Off the Grid food trucks, live music, family-friendly art activities, and more.
