After eight days of jam-packed premieres, screenings, live events, galas and parties, SFIAAFF30 wraps in San Francisco on Thursday night with two back-to-back screenings of the World Premiere of Prison Dancer: The Interactive Web Musical.
Inspired by the viral Youtube phenomenon, the “Dancing Inmates of Cebu,” this original interactive musical web series is a “Glee-meets-Miss Saigon” adventure that paints a fictional portrait of the people behind the scenes – from a flamboyant, destined-to-be-choreographer and his gay minions to a pair of star-crossed lovers kept apart by the prison’s walls. Featuring a cast of Youtube stars and some of the hottest, rising Filipino musical talent in North America, Prison Dancer brings together the best of Broadway and Youtube entertainment.
This special “performative cinema” event will include video, live performances by cast members, and maestro-led audience participation. A once-in-a-lifetime program, this unprecedented experience rethinks what media is and can be. Following each screening, there will be a Q&A with Director Romeo Candido along with other producers, cast, and crew.
Online advance tickets are no longer available for this presentation, but if you’re lucky, you may still be able to score a ticket in the “rush” line outside the venue (rush lines form usually one hour before showtime). Approximately ten minutes prior to the screening, empty seats will be counted and sold on a first-come, first-served basis to those in line. Rush tickets will only be sold to those actually waiting in line.
Congratulations to Prison Dancer on its incredible response not only from our SFIAAFF audiences, but also by local press and media. Read this great write-up on SFGate.com.
