Shanghai is coming to SF! In association with the new Shanghai Art Exhibit at the SF Asian Art Museum SFIAAFF 2010 is proud to present two films by acclaimed Chinese artist Yang Fudong.

The films are based on the metaphorical fantasy of seven contemporary individuals (based on real-life 3rd-century Taoist intellectuals) who withdraw from modern society. A dreamlike, thought-provoking discourse on men and women, history and modernity, and individuals and society.

The title refers to the “Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove,” a third-century group of Taoist intellectuals who withdrew from public and political life to engage in intellectual and artistic pursuits. This disjuncture between corrupt political life and idealism mirrors the alienation experienced by modern intellectuals toward contemporary Chinese urban life. Complete with elegant clothing styles and black-and-white cinematography (both recalling the romantic era of early 20th-century Shanghai), Yang re-imagines the group as beautiful young men and women in a fantasy space that may be situated in the countryside or the city, in either the present or a fabled past.
