The San Francisco Foundation Bay Area Documentary Fund consists of four or five awards, ranging from $20,000 to $25,000, which will be given out annually to support documentary projects in early production phases by experienced filmmakers with an esteemed body of previously created work. Projects should address issues pertinent to the five Bay Area counties of Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, or San Mateo. The San Francisco Foundation is interested in documentaries exploring issues that have been historically underexposed, misinterpreted, or ignored. Filmmakers must reside in Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, or San Mateo counties. Only filmmakers with a proven track record of planning and finishing substantial film projects will be considered. Students may not apply. Individual filmmakers must be fiscally sponsored by a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in one of the five Bay Area counties listed above. Artists may only apply once for any given documentary project. If a filmmaker receives The San Francisco Foundation Bay Area Documentary Fund award, they are not eligible again for five years.

The San Francisco Foundation will review applications only once a year.
