To underscore its commitment to supporting Asian American filmmakers and recognizing their achievements, the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival inaugurated in 2005 a juried competition in two categories (Best Narrative, Best Documentary) as well as Audience Awards. Winners are announced at the Closing Night Gala party.

LONI DING AWARD IN SOCIAL ISSUE DOCUMENTARY

In 2011, CAAM presented the Loni Ding Award in Social Issue Documentary in memory of the filmmaker, educator and activist’s commitment to illuminating the experiences of underrepresented communities. A veteran independent television producer and university instructor, Loni Ding devoted her life to advocacy and public service, and played a key role in the founding of several public media organizations, including (CAAM) and the Independent Television Service (ITVS). The Loni Ding Award in Social Issue Documentary Award is presented to the film and filmmaker that most reflects Loni’s passion and commitment.
