The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) recently gave SOMA Pilipinas a $100,000 “Our Town” arts grant that will go toward the Filipino Cultural Heritage District.
The actress is best known for her work in film and web series, but she’s also dedicated much of her life to youth and working with students. Her debut children’s book, a first in a series, is about an Indian American girl named Anjali.
The grant supports CAAM’s work with Asian American documentary filmmakers in the South.
“I believe in the inherited trauma of war. I think there’s a lot of weight to absorb when you are raised by people whose lives were upended, who had to flee to live.”
The grants will support a Virtual Reality project directed by acclaimed filmmaker Wayne Wang and storytelling from California’s diverse Central Valley.
