Join CAAM in celebrating the voices, stories and experiences of LGBT Asian Pacific Americans.

CAAM believes in building a more inclusive society and in diversity in all its forms. This month, we are thrilled to celebrate LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) Pride Month. The mission of LGBT Pride Month is to educate the world and celebrate the culture and heritage of LGBT people and communities. In the spirit of Pride Month, CAAM is proud to support a range of public programs, online and in-person film screenings happening this month. Join CAAM in celebrating the voices, stories and experiences of LGBT Asian Pacific Americans.

PRIDE film screening at De Anza College June 6

Join the Center for Asian American Media, De Anza’s Political Revolution, and HRC San Francisco Bay Area on Tuesday, June 6th at De Anza College (21250 Stevens Creek Blvd, Cupertino, 95014) for a special Pride Month screening of the films ESCAPING AGRA and ADRIFT IN SUNSET. ESCAPING AGRA peers into the life of trans college student, Naveen Bhat chronicling their experience of being illegally detained by their parents in Agra, India after their true sexuality and identity is learned. Narissa Lee’s short film ADRIFT IN SUNSET follows what happens when Dao decides she’s ready to date. She brings her Alzheimer’s-ridden mother along in order to spend time with her. This takes the date on an unexpected journey filled with love, family and neighborhood nostalgia that will hit home for many. The screening will include a discussion with Pallavi Somusetty, the director of ESCAPING AGRA. This program is free to the public and will take place in the De Anza College Conference Rooms A and B (located in the Hinson Campus Center) at 6:30pm on June 6th. Learn more and RSVP on Facebook.

CAAM’s LGBT Films for Educators

Did you know that CAAM has the country’s largest collection of films and videos by and about Asian Americans for educational distribution? Our collection includes award-winning documentaries, personal stories, dramas and experimental works on a variety of subjects and ethnicities, including 10 titles about LGBT communities. In honor of LGBT Pride Month, we encourage you to rent or purchase one or more of these films and share it with your students and fellow educators. View our collection here. S. Leo Chiang and Johnny Symons’ Out Run streaming on World Channel and PBS

OUT RUN is a feature-length documentary by S. Leo Chiang and Johnny Symons that follows a trio of dynamic transgender women as they lead the only LGBT political party in the world on a historic quest to win Congressional seats in the Philippines. In 2012, Chiang participated in the Ready, Set, Pitch competition at CAAMFest 2012 and received a $5,000 CAAM challenge grant to support the research and development for OUT RUN. Stream the film this month on the WORLD Channel Doc World series website.

CAAM at FRAMELINE41: June 15-25

The San Francisco International LGBTQ Film Festival (Frameline) is the world’s premiere LGBTQ film festival. Presented by our friends at Frameline, this year’s festival returns to venues throughout the Bay Area, June 15-25, 2017. Buy tickets on the Frameline41 website.
