FRONTLINE/World and the National Minority Consortia (NMC) are collaborating on a joint call for proposals for an online series entitled ABROAD AT HOME, part of FRONTLINE/World’s larger 2008 Election project called “The World is Watching.”

Our goal is to promote the most innovative and exceptional storytelling by diverse reporters and to choose stories that provide fresh perspectives on the elections from inside the complex mosaic of American society. We will be awarding five grants of $3,000 for short video reports, approximately 15 minutes in length.

About the Series

FRONTLINE/World, the international newsmagazine whose “stories from a small planet” cover themes from politics to culture, will launch “The World Is Watching” on July 1st with weekly written dispatches and video reports providing an international perspective on the candidates and issues in the US presidential election. These stories will be commissioned both from reporters in other countries, as well as reporters from US immigrant and ethnic communities. The goal is to reflect on America’s role and impact in a global society with a particular focus on peace and security, immigration, trade and labor, health and the environment.

FRONTLINE/World will also offer five grants of $1,000 each for written dispatches with short video clips. Again, the grants will be awarded to reflect ethnic communities across the US.

The National Minority Consortia (NMC) consisting of five organizations serving the Asian American, African America, Latino, Native American and the Pacific Islander communities, launched the “Diversity Beat” a multi-platform Election initiative in Fall 2007 with the goal of incorporating diversity in public media as a central premise to covering a national news event. The NMC is particularly focused on nurturing and bringing new minority talent to the public broadcast realm by collaborating with PBS strands such as FRONTLINE/World.
